Resolved Questions

Can I place asterisks as start/stop characters around my data for all barcode font types?

I know I can place asterisks around my data for Code 39 before I apply the Code 39 barcode font.

Can I place asterisks around my data for barcode font types such as Code 128, Postnet, and UPC?

CAN ASTERISKS BE USED FOR ALL BARCODE TYPES?
All linear barcode types use start/stop characters. However, not all linear barcode types use asterisks as start/stop characters.

ABOUT START/STOP CHARACTERS

The only symbology that uses asterisks as start/stop characters is Code 39. Other barcode types such as Code 128 or UPC require different start/stop characters to complete the encoded data for the barcode. In fact, most symbologies require the data to be encoded through a process that manipulates the original data using a font tool/font encoder. To learn more about encoding, please view Why Data Needs to be Encoded?

ENCODING AND START/STOP EXAMPLE

To view an example of start/stop characters for different symbologies, please view the Online Font Encoder.

EXAMPLES:
If my data is: 123456 this is what the encoded data would be for each symbology. The start/stop characters are at the beginning and end of the data (bold).

CODE 39:
*123456* or !123456! (Exclamation points can also be used as start/stop characters for Code 39).

CODE 128:
Í,BXLÎ

INTERLEAVED 2 OF 5:
Ë-CYÌ

To generate start/stop characters for barcode types other than Code 39, we recommend using IDAutomation Font Tools.

NOTE: If you are using a component or application such as the .NET Forms Control or Barcode Label Software that generates a barcode as an image, then adding start/stop characters are not required because the component or application has a process that adds and paints the start/stop bars.
