Unable to Scan Code 128 Barcodes

[Support Note: Sensitive information removed from post]

We are a commercial printer in Kenya needing to print variable barcodes using the IDAutomation Code 128 Font Package, as we see it will help us simplify our process by adding your product to our process.

We are performing a merge process into InDesign and are attempting to use the demo barcode fonts, but are unable to scan what we are getting.

Could you advise us on the best course of action?

To properly generate Code 128 barcodes depends on the operating system that you are running and whether or not you are encoding the data (formatting the data) using an IDAutomation barcode font formula.

What is a barcode font formula?
A Barcode Font Formula is formula inside of an add-in, plug-in, or source code that performs a calculation to convert data into a format that the barcode font can understand. After the data passes though the font encoder, it is referred to as encoded data.

In order to generate barcodes in InDesign, a data merge is required from Excel to InDesign. For Excel, we have a barcode font encoder named the IDAutomation VBA Macros.

A combination of a barcode font and a barcode font encoder will create a scannable barcode.

IF YOU ARE RUNNING WINDOWS (EXCEL AND INDESIGN):

If you are running Windows, use the IDAutomation Code 128 Font Package with the IDAutomation VBA and follow this tutorial to produce barcodes. After formatting the data, perform a data merge and apply the barcode font to the merged field in InDesign.

IF YOU ARE RUNNING MAC (EXCEL 2004 OR 2011 AND INDESIGN):
If you are running Mac, use the Code 128 Font for Mac Package with the IDAutomation Universal VBA. This font package includes formulas in RTF files that can be imported into Excel using this solution. After formatting the data, perform a data merge and apply the barcode font to the merged field in InDesign.

IF BARCODES DO NOT SCAN AFTER ENCODING:
Verify the barcode font size is set to 12, 18, or 24 points.
