Creating a barcode using fonts requires two components: the barcode font and the barcode font encoder. The font encoder is responsible for adding specific characters to the data such as check digits and start/stop characters. It may even format the data, making it unreadable to the human eye but readable to the barcode font. A valid barcode is created using a two-step process:

1. Encode the data (with a font encoder).
2. Apply the barcode font (to the encoded data).

The examples display the encoded data for several barcodes symbologies (barcode types).
