Encode means to convert data into another form.

Unlike fonts such as Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New, barcode fonts require an extra step to ensure that the created barcode is scannable/usable.

In order to create a scannable barcode, data must pass through a formula called a font encoder or font tool. A font encoder can be a plug-in, add-in, formula, or source code that performs a calculation to produce encoded data.

The encoded data can include:

Start/Stop Characters
image
(example uses Code 128)

Guard bars
image
(for UPC and EAN)

Check character
image
(example of Code 39 Mod 43)

Various forms of Encoded data
AOBPCPGJAJDJFKAPHOFLBKHMGK
AJEBFLCLMAODGAJBDHMFAOOCKK
ALNPEAIDLKDFOOGLDLBNNDBKAK
AFANFPALPAEGOPDKHJADJBADHK
AFBLFPBCJEMKFPJLDAHKLOAAAK
AIKFJNGIFNILEHLCLKFONJLEKK
DLDLLDDLDDLDDDDDLDLDDLLDLL
(example of Data Matrix encoded data)

Start/Stop characters let the barcode scanner know when to begin and end a barcode scan. Check characters ensure that the barcode is being properly created. Encoded data is data in a form that only barcode fonts can understand. When the barcode font is applied to the encoded data, a scannable barcode is created.

NOTE: 2D Barcode Font Encoders are included in each 2D Font Package.
