Confused After Scanning Into Excel

We are scanning barcodes into Excel to see what is encoded (in them) and some ‘jump around’ (go horizontal or vertical) after scanning.

Can you tell us how to see what is in a barcode?

Operating System: Windows

Application: Excel

Barcodes can have function keys (also known as hidden characters, unprintable characters, or lower-ASCII) encoded in them, such as Carriage Return (Enter or CR) or Horizontal Tab (Tab or HT). These function keys come from the lower end of the ASCII decimal values (ASCII 0 – ASCII 31).

Excel (and many other programs) interpret function keys in their own specific way*. This leads to confusion as to what is in the barcode itself.

The recommended way to discover what is encoded in a barcode is to turn lower-ASCII on* and scan into a program that will show the hidden characters, such as the Barcode Scanner ASCII String Decoder.

*Refer to the respective manual for more details.
