DataBar UFL and Crystal Reports Data Limit Warning (DataBar Expanded and Expanded Stacked)

We are excited to use the DataBar UFL in our Crystal Report project and understand that the main difference between DataBar Expanded and DataBar Expanded Stacked is the number of sections assigned to the barcode (which affects the width and stacks the barcode at low even values).

As a test, we used the 6-Segment DataBar Coupon Barcode example across different segment values. The hard-coded (static) value we used as a test was (8110)10014141012345290110100.

We used the following DataBar UFL function, with differing values for s segments (represented by xx below):

numberVar s:= xx;
IDAutomationDataBarExpanded("(8110)10014141012345290110100", s)

Here is the test result at different given values of s:

* s = 22 (the default for DataBar Expanded - this barcode is correct):

* s = 6 (this barcode is not correct):

When we reassigned a non-DataBar font (like Arial) to the formula field, we saw that it was an error message:

Encoded text over Crystal Reports data limit - use DataBar UFL Expanded Stacked custom formula.

Please explain what the message means.

Operating System: Windows

Application: Crystal Reports

The error message encountered was built into the DataBar UFL to let the user know that a Crystal Report data limitation would be interfering in the transmission of the entire encoded text (which is returned by the DataBar UFL functions).

To bypass this limitation in Crystal Reports, IDAutomation has created a custom formula for the formula fields which employ the DataBar Expanded and Expanded Stacked symbologies. In the example report supplied in the download, one can find the custom formula (which is recommended for both DataBar Expanded and Expanded Stacked).

The formula below has been modified for this forum post:

stringVar DataToEncode:= "(8110)10014141012345290110100";
numberVar Segments:= 6;

//DO NOT CHANGE ANY DATA BELOW THIS LINE
stringVar CompleteBarcodeString:="";
numberVar i:=0;
numberVar DataSegments:= ToNumber (IDAutomationDataBarExpandedStackedSet(DataToEncode,Segments));
For i:=1 to DataSegments Do
(
CompleteBarcodeString := CompleteBarcodeString + IDAutomationDataBarExpandedStackedGet(DataToEncode,Segments,i);
);
CompleteBarcodeString

Which produces a valid barcode when an IDAutomation DataBar Font is applied to the formula field:
