Differences Between DataMatrix and GS1-DataMatrix


Your website (which is great) has examples of all manner of barcodes, yet no mention of the non-GS1 version of the DataMatrix barcodes.

We are looking to understand the differences and wonder why this is not referenced.

The DataMatrix documentation is both GS1 and non-GS1 based. Basically, If you do not need to encode GS1, then you only need not use Application Identifiers (AIs) and/or turn off ApplyTilde (ProcessTilde) – the barcode would then be DataMatrix, as GS1 is just the way the data is formatted (according to GS1).

When generating GS1 symbols, IDAutomation recommends testing the result with the Barcode Decoder App which parses out GS1 data to verify proper encoding.

Simple Examples:

GS1-DataMatrix:

Standard (non-GS1) DataMatrix:
