PDF produces strange characters using the Native Generator for Oracle Reports

When I create a barcode using the Native Generator for Oracle Reports on my machine, it looks fine. We have our NLS LANG set up correctly but when we view the barcode in PDF, it does not produce the barcode.

The Native Oracle Barcode Generator is an object that may be inserted into Oracle Reports to create bar code images. Once installed, no other components or fonts need to be installed to create barcodes; it is the complete barcode generator.

It is compatible with Oracle Reports 9i and above.

The error presented can occur when the barcode is displayed in a PDF. Because the Native Generator uses a specific group of Unicode characters to build the barcode, it is not uncommon for the PDF utility to have difficulty converting these characters. If this is the case, the IDAutomation recommends using

Barcode Fonts and the Font Encoder PLL (compatible with 6i and above)

or

The Java Barcode Component (compatible with 9i and above)
