We have a requirement to produce GS1 UPC barcodes for a client. We have dealt with DataBar (GS1 DataBar Barcode Fonts) before, but wanted to know what was involved in creating GS1 UPC (the UPC/EAN Barcode Font Package).

James	Best Answer A GS1 UPC barcode contains the following parts in the barcode data (12 numerical digits total): The First 11 Digits: · Company Prefix: A unique 6 to 9-digit number assigned to a company, which is globally unique. This number is obtained by the company directly from GS1. For this post the example Company Prefix is 555555. · Item Reference: Based on the company's internal numbering system, this number (the rest of the 2 to 5 digits) uniquely identifies the products the company produces. For this post the example Item Reference is 01234. The Last Digit: · This number is a calculated number called a modulo 10 (mod10) check digit, which is based on the proceeding 11 digits. In general, check digits provide a way to 'check' if the other digits have been read- in essence providing error correction. The mod10 can be verified using the IDAutomation Free Barcode Font Encoder's 'MOD 10' button. For this post, the calculated mod10 is 8. · When encoding GS1 UPC with IDAutomation products (be it using barcode fonts or in barcode components), the mod10 is calculated and appended to the first 11 digits.
