A GS1 UPC barcode contains the following parts in the barcode data (12 numerical digits total):

The First 11 Digits:
· Company Prefix: A unique 6 to 9-digit number assigned to a company, which is globally unique. This number is obtained by the company directly from GS1. For this post the example Company Prefix is 555555.

· Item Reference: Based on the company's internal numbering system, this number (the rest of the 2 to 5 digits) uniquely identifies the products the company produces. For this post the example Item Reference is 01234.

The Last Digit:
· This number is a calculated number called a modulo 10 (mod10) check digit, which is based on the proceeding 11 digits. In general, check digits provide a way to 'check' if the other digits have been read- in essence providing error correction. The mod10 can be verified using the IDAutomation Free Barcode Font Encoder's 'MOD 10' button. For this post, the calculated mod10 is 8.

· When encoding GS1 UPC with IDAutomation products (be it using barcode fonts
or in barcode components), the mod10 is calculated and appended to the first 11 digits.

The Final GS1 UPC Barcode:
· Combined, the data to encode is 55555501234 (not including the mod10, as it will be automatically added by the barcode product, and will appear in the scan output itself).

· To stay general in the implementation, we will use the Free Online Linear Barcode Image Creator, which is the demo for the Dynamic Barcode Generator as a Service (SaaS) Subscription (click the image link to see the URL call, which uses various parameters):
