Dynamically Generate 2D Barcodes in Spreadsheet

We have the need to scan a set of barcodes into a spreadsheet (into the first column) and have a 2D barcode in the cell immediately to the right (next column to the right).

We have come across some technical hurdles in the pursuit to this solution:

* Excel does not allow the proper formation of a 2D barcode font (without performing a Mail Merge) because of a known glitch

* Excel does not allow the embedding of an image into a cell directly

* Excel does not allow an image to have a dynamic source (to change along the way)

We saw you have a Native Barcode Generator for Google Docs that supports Codabar, Code 39, Code 128, GS1-128 (UCC/EAN 128), Interleaved 2 of 5, MSI and Postnet- but none of those are 2D barcode types.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Using Google Docs in conjunction with IDAutomation's Dynamic Barcode Generator Subscription is a great way to dynamically stream a properly-formed barcode image directly next to the data you have previously scanned in.

For the purpose of this discussion, I will use Data Matrix as an example 2D barcode-type (symbology). I will also be using the demo version of the Dynamic Barcode Generator Subscription, more specifically using the demo Data Matrix URLs.

GOOGLE DOCS:

Google Spreadsheet (part of Google Docs) allows for images to be inserted into cells. Using the IMAGE function (as described by Google):

=image(URL) or =image(URL, 1): Inserting this formula into a cell will scale the image to fit inside of the selected cell. If the cell is bigger than image you're inserting, the remainder of the cell will be white.

=image(URL, 2): Inserting this formula will stretch the image to fit inside of the selected cell. The aspect ratio (height vs. width) of the image won't be preserved.

=image(URL, 3): This formula will insert the image into the cell at its original size. If the image is bigger than the cell, some of the image may be cut off.

=image(URL, 4, height, width): Inserting this formula allows you to customize the size of the image by specifying the height and width of the image in pixels. The height and width parameters are required for this option.

Note: URL is actually the URL in quotes as a string.

DYNAMIC BARCODE GENERATOR SUBSCRIPTION:

There are many URL properties to the Dynamic Barcode Generator Subscription (look under +General Barcode Properties for all Symbologies and +DataMatrix-Specific Barcode Properties).

For the purposes of this discussion, we are using the default parameters from the demo Data Matrix URL which starts out with:

image

The section (after D=) IDAutomation.com, Inc. is the parameter for the data that forms the barcode. This is what we will be changing, primarily.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:

Enter the Google Spreadsheet formula =image("URL", [optional number]) modified with our URL and altered (we replaced IDAutomation.com, Inc. with "&A1&") to input the cell to the left:

The result:
