I will outline several products that will be able to generate barcodes for InDesign--this will include direct solutions and solutions that must use other applications such as Excel.

OPTION 1:
USING CODE 39 FONTS DIRECTLY IN INDESIGN

Code 39 Barcode Fonts
Buy Code 39 Fonts

This implementation is compatible directly in InDesign for Windows, Mac, and other operating systems.

Video about Code 39 Fonts:

To generate Code 39 barcodes directly in InDesign, append asterisks to your data and apply the IDAutomation Code 39 Barcode Font.

If you are using Excel as your data source to perform a data merge into InDesign, you can append the asterisks directly in Excel, export your file as a CSV, perform the data merge, and then apply the IDAutomation Code 39 Font.

Example of appending asterisks to data in Excel:
="*" & CELL & "*"

OPTION 2:
USING LINEAR BARCODE FONTS IN EXCEL FOR DATA MERGE

If you need to generate other linear barcode types, such as Code 128, Interleaved 2 of 5, Code 39, or UPC, you must format your data with a font encoder in Excel.

Why data must be encoded using a font encoder?

To format the data, Windows and Mac users can use the IDAutomation Barcode Add-In for Excel Barcode Add-In for Excel.

After the data is formatted in Excel, export the file as a CSV, perform the data merge, and then apply the IDAutomation Barcode font.

NOTE to Mac Users:
The Barcode Add-In is compatible with Excel 2004 and 2011. It is not compatible with Excel 2008 since this version does not have the ability to use VBA. For users working in Excel 2008, our only option for formatting data is to use our AppleScript code in Excel.

If you need to generate barcodes for Code 128 or Interleaved 2 of 5, then you may have to use our Universal Font Package.

What are Universal Fonts?

Why do Mac users need to use Universal Fonts on Excel for Mac for Code 128 or Interleaved 2 of 5?

NOTE to Windows Users:
If you have installed the font and the Barcode Add-In but do not see the Add-Ins tab, please view the VBA option.
