Is the OCR-B font compatible with letterpress?


Is the OCR-B font with curved ends compatible with letterpress versions with straight ends? OCR-B ECMA-11 specifications include both constant stroke width (with curved ends) and letterpress fonts (with straight ends). However, IDAutomation’s OCR fonts are provided in only constant stroke-width (curved end) format.

Before creating the OCR-B fonts, IDAutomation compared current ANSI and ISO specifications. One of the specifications used for OCR-B, which is ANSI INCITS 49-1975 (R2002), states that it is in agreement with the revised ISO standard. It also states that the OCR-B font with curved ends and constant stroke widths is compatible with the font with straight ends, which is referred to as the “Letterpress” version. Our fonts are created with curved ends and constant stroke widths because this method is most compatible with the various standards and it allows for a substantial deterioration of printed image quality, while still maintaining OCR readability.
