Error displayed in barcode in SSRS when binding to a dataset field - demo version

I am trying to use class clsIDAutomationBarcode in SSRS 2008 R2 to generate a barcode from data coming back from the database. I configured references to the DLL as indicated in the tutorial. I prepared a textbox which uses the IDAutomationSHbC128M font and I configured an expression:
=code.clsIDAutomationBarcode.Code128(First(Fields!DrawingNo.Value, "Header"))

When the report renders, I see an Error in the human-readable text below the barcode. I have been able to use the same expression in another field but using a hard-coded value:
=code.clsIDAutomationBarcode.Code128("Hello")

I know Fields!DrawingNo.Value contains a valid value because I displayed it in another textbox.

Why does the first expression doesn't work? Is there special handling when putting a dataset field in a barcode?

Operating System: windows 2008

Note: A new product (SSRS Native Barcode Generator) has been released since this post was resolved that offers a more straightforward method of generating barcodes in SSRS without fonts or other components.

Ensure that if you are applying the IDAutomationSHbC128M font you are using the IDAutomation Code 128 B function.

I have already tried Reporting Services CRI. The significant disadvantage is that the LinearBarcode item cannot be placed in the header. SSRS gives an error that custom report items cannot be placed in the header/footer and we want to barcode some of that information.

Does the barcode scan? If so, what is the result of the barcode scan? Can you post a screenshot?

The IDAutomation Reporting Services CRI, may work better. You may download the demo version.

There is no "error" generated by the report. The report runs and opens, but only the caption underneath the barcode says "Error" which forces me to believe there is a problem. I couldn't find any clues on what the problem could be.
