Data Matrix C40 Encoding using Smartstream

We are using the smartstream plugin to generate Data Matrix codes for our Indigo press and this uses ID Automation encoder to create the barcodes. The barcode contents are 12 Alphanumeric characters, in 8x32 rectangular format, and using C40 encoding. But the barcode is not always generated at the correct size, depending on the number of Alpha characters in the string - it can revert to a square code, so assuming it does not like the particular set of characters.

I believe that 12 Alpha characters should be possible at this size - a maximum of 13. Is that correct? And anything we need to be aware of, or limitations.

Brant	Best Answer With our Data Matrix Font and Encoder, C40 consists of up to 13 numeric and upper case characters. If you have anything else in the data encoded (a space, a symbol, or a lowercase character) the symbol will be larger. Thanks for clarifying.

Every encoded string will be fixed at 12 characters, all numeric or upper case, so 8x32 should be fine. We tried out some combinations and even ABCDEFGHIJ - only 10 characters, will change and encode as a square data matrix. I assume that is not what would be expected.

I have the Data Matrix Font Encoder application installed and that cannot encode 13 Alpha characters of this size. But I can achieve this with standard labeling software.
