How do you remove the tildes from the PDF417 barcode when scanning?

When scanning PDF417 barcodes with apply tilde checked, the data is returned twice from one scan of the barcode. The data is returned once with the tildes (~###) and another time with the tildes translated to the correct character. I need just the data without the tildes. How do I get rid of the tildes when scanning?

Example
If ~043 (plus sign) is entered and Apply Tilde is checked. The scanner returns ~043+. I expected to get just the character +.
If ~043 (plus sign) is entered and Apply Tilde is NOT checked. The scanner returns ~043. I expect these results

The issue is in the 2011 version Image Generator.

Currently, the unreleased version (2014) of the Image Generator does not have this problem.

If possible:

• Use The Data Matrix or QR Code option to generate barcodes.

• Encode + and other values directly.

• Consider the Barcode Label Software Pro.

Now that I am not able to use the Apply Tilde, I am calling PDF417 Image Generator.exe from the command line with non-printable characters (RS, GS,&EOT) in the data to encode. The image that is created has all the data except the non-printable characters. Is there another way to escape the non-printable characters so that the image generator will not strip out these characters?
