How to use VBA Script to allow CR and HT Functions to work in Excel cells?


We recently figured out how to move around in Excel using the CR and TAB.

General Steps:
1. Encode the ASCII value as the barcode type recommends (see the barcode type’s manual).
2. Scan the barcode into the Free ASCII Decoder to make sure it is working correctly.

Carriage Return (CR):
• ASCII Value: 13
• Change in Excel:

Go to Excel Options > Advanced > Editing Options:

TAB (HT or Horizontal Tab):
• ASCII Value: 9
• Change in Excel:

No direct way to change in Excel, but a SuperUser Article gave the following VBA script (paste into a Module added to an Excel spreadsheet and save as an XLSM):

VBA Code:

Option Explicit
Sub SettabKey()
Application.OnKey "{TAB}", "MoveDown"
End Sub

Sub MoveDown()
If TypeOf Selection Is Range Then _
ActiveCell.Offset(, 1).Select
End Sub


Additional Notes:
• To reset it use Application.OnKey "{TAB}"
• Options for OnKey
• You should be able to replace MoveDown with MoveRight, MoveUp, or MoveLeft – see the Microsoft documentation for more details.
