Carriage return in Code 128 barcode not working in Excel

We're trying to create barcodes with a carriage return at the end. In Word, we are creating
123456~013
and using the Add-In to Change to Barcode with the Code 128 symbology selected.

The barcode prints and is able to be scanned, however, it tabs (by changing the tab value on Word) the 123456 value and does not do a return. I'm not sure why this is happening.

I do not believe you are doing anything wrong. The carriage return is in there. You can also test this in Notepad. I know this issue sometimes occurs in Excel and I believe it may be a configuration issue within Excel (and Word). Most applications can properly interpret these functions from a barcode/scanner.

Yes, It works correctly in the decoder. See image.

Is there a reason it doesn't work in Word though? image

When using the ASCII String Decoder, are you able to see the Carriage Return <CR>?

Example:

I used the Image Generator to encode a tab and a return into the data 1234567890 for Code 128.

The tab is encoded with ~009 and the Carriage Return is encoded with ~013.

When I scan the barcode:

the ASCII String Decoder should display the Tab and Carriage Return:

Does this occur?

If not, please send a PDF to us: Contact Us and I can test it.

Ben - thanks for the quick response.

I've used the decoder and the barcodes we are creating work correctly in the decoder. Is there something that needs to be done in Word/Excel to make it work the same there?

To find out if the actual CR has been encoded, we have a free application that can detect hidden characters such as Tabs, and Carriage Returns.

Download the ASCII String Decoder

You may also send the barcode in a PDF to support@idautomation.com and I can test it.
