What is an FNC1 character?

All I know is that I need to create a GS1-128 barcode with the data, (01)1234567890. What is an FNC1? What does it do?

The FNC1 (Function Code One) is an invisible character designed to identify and separate fields for variable-length application identifiers. The application identifier recognizes the type of data encoded.

For example, the USA Coupon Code uses 8110 as its Application Identifier for Databar Expanded Stacked (a barcode Databar barcode type).

For variable-length application identifiers, encode the FNC1 before the Application Identifier.

The Application Identifier in the data (01)1234567890 is 01. To encode the FNC1 in Code 128 using IDAutomation barcode products, enable ApplyTilde (a feature required to encode functions) and surround the AI with parentheses (if that feature is implemented) or use ~202 for Code 128 and ~1 for QR Code and Data Matrix. The FNC1 can be used in Code 128, Aztec, Data Matrix, DotCode, and Databar barcodes.

When generating GS1 symbols, test the result with the Barcode Decoder App which parses out GS1 data to verify proper encoding.
