What is the purpose of a font encoder?

Why do I need to encode data using a font? I can create barcodes on the web from other sites that do not require an encoder.

A font encoder (font tool) is an add-in, plug-in, or stand alone tool designed to format data for a barcode. Data formatting may include adding start/stop characters (tells the scanner when to begin and end a scan) and/or calculating a check character (to ensure the barcode is properly created).

A font does not have the ability to perform a calculation on its own. Therefore, a combination of your data, the tool, and the font will generate a scannable barcode.

(Example uses Code 128)

For example, if I wanted to create a barcode using the data, Andy, and I simply applied the barcode font, the barcode would not be scannable. This is because the barcode symbology requires start/stop and check digits.

There are products that do not require font encoders such as the Dynamic Barcode Generator Service, ActiveX Control, Java Component and other products available on the Web. This is because these component generate barcode images (different than a barcode font). A barcode component takes the data, encodes the data and paints the barcode on a canvas all in one file that contains code to perform the tasks.

A barcode font cannot work like a component that generates an image; this is why it requires a font encoder.

Data + Encoder = Encoded Data
Apply the barcode font to the Encoded Data to receive a scannable barcode.
