The data merge for a 2D barcode type to InDesign can be a bit tricky as there are hidden line breaks and carriage returns. We have a tutorial that goes over how to set this up to merge a 2D barcode like Data Matrix located here: How to Create 2D barcodes in InDesign using Fonts. Please give that a try and let us know if it resolves your issue for you.

Unfortunately, this is the best information we have regarding making the line breaks and carriage returns visible for InDesign to identify and then return them to their invisible state once merged as this is something handled by InDesign as an application and is not a function of creating the barcode directly. Did you choose the option for "Change All" and then "Done" in Step 9?

The Data Matrix barcode type has different formats and some of the formats will appear as 4 squares making up one barcode. The list of formats can be found here: Data Matrix Formats. The parameters you can choose in Excel would be for the Preferred Format via this entry in your Excel formula: (DataToEncode As String, Optional ProcessTilde, Optional EncodingMode, Optional PreferredFormat)

I would recommend contacting InDesign support directly for assistance with merging data as that would be outside of the scope of IDAutomation support and they may be able to assist you further with the character replacement as well as getting the settings to be applied.

Still Struggling with it. I get to the point where I remove the _r_r in the preview but then it returns again once I uncheck it I
create a code but it looks like it is 4 of them in a box and they only show up every 8 pages.
