Resolved Questions

Some values are not printing correctly

We are using Oracle Reports under Oracle eBS to print out serial numbers using the IDAutomation Code 128 Barcode Font Package.

The encoder is the PL/SQL’s Code128 function. For some values, we are getting barcodes where a box is shown:

One of the data strings that cause the error is ALB14087824315001. For this string, the encoded text we are getting from the PL/SQL’s Code128 function is ÌALBÇ.(n8?R!ÂÎ.

How can we solve this? Is this a recognized bug in the encoding or barcode font?

The encoded string ÌALBÇ.(n8?R!ÂÎ correctly represents ALB14087824315001 - make sure the font being applied is a standard Code 128 IDAutomation barcode font, having a font name that starts with IDAutomationC128.

If the above still does not produce the correct barcode in the environment, it may be that the issue is a regional character set conflict. The solution would be to use the Universal Barcode Font Package and a respective Code 128 function from one of the Universal Font Encoders.

We cannot advise on an implementation-specific NLS_LANG setting.

Instead, use the Universal Fonts and the respective universal encoder function to resolve the issue (depending on the Oracle product used):

Oracle Reports: PLL Library (download, tutorial, and function list)
Oracle XML/BI Publisher: Java Barcode Font Encoder Class Library

Our database character set is defined as WE8MSWIN1252 in Oracle Reports (Oracle eBusiness Suite).

Using this character set, do you think we will have the same issue?
