Using GS1 standards with Code 128

We currently use the 128 barcode Set C for a GS1 barcode. We are passing the following data to create one single barcode. 0100260720001484:21123456789012 The 01 at the beginning and 21 after the ":" are the Data delimiters "01" designates the Device Identifier and "21" designates the serial number.
Note: The colon is not part of the data just a delimiter to show where the serial number starts.

This is working fine. We now need to have alphanumeric serial numbers and would need to pass data as the following. 0100260720001484:211MR1234567890

We cannot use Code B because it creates a barcode too long.

When I process this data in the Online linear barcode creator using "Auto" for the Character set it creates the barcode. If I use set C it will remove the Alpha characters. If I use set B the barcode size is longer than when using Auto.

When using auto does it use multiple character sets A and B?

Thanks
Todd

For GS1-128 barcodes, review this post.

When generating GS1 symbols, IDAutomation recommends testing the result with the Barcode Decoder App which parses out GS1 data to verify proper encoding.

Hi Ben, We have a Unibasic program that creates the barcode from reading and writing back to a Word Template. Currently, for this instance, we are using the 128 code set C because all characters are numeric. But there has been a change and the serial number (2nd set of characters in the example can be alpha-numeric. Code Set B makes the barcode too long.

We just need a linear barcode that can work with GS1 standards. I did see in the documentation that you can change code sets for a value to make one barcode. That's if I read it properly.

Thanks
