An Application Identifier (AI) defines the purpose of the data in the symbol and how it is to be used. It is commonly used in GS1 barcodes. The GS1 Application Identifier (AI) appears after the Function Code 1 (FNC1) in Code 128, Data Matrix or DataBar Expanded barcodes. An FNC1 specifies that the data/barcode is a GS1 barcode.

In a grocery store, produce may have a barcode on it that represents a lot of information, including an expiration date. To identify that the data will include the expiration date, an AI is assigned to it. The Application Identifier, 17, means that the data that comes after it is an expiration date.

(AI)YYMMDD
(17)150224 (February 24, 2015)

The parentheses around the AI data are displayed in the human-readable form so that it is easily identified. Within the barcode, the FNC1 is encoded so that the application can recognize that the data is an element string.
