Code 39 barcode not working for numbers under three digits

When I use the IDAutomation Code39 font for printing numbers with fewer than three digits (i.e. less than 100), the barcode generated is not readable. That is, the barcode is printed, but I cannot read it with a scanner.

For example, if I enter 1 or 45 as the quantity to be printed as a barcode, the resultant barcode cannot be read, but if I enter 001 or 045, then it can be read, so it must print a different barcode for 045 than for 45.

Operating System: Windows 7

Application: Crystal Reports XI

Verify that the scanner is set to read barcodes that contain less than three characters.

If you own the IDAutomation SC5USB Scanner, you can set the minimum barcode length using the Quick Programming Guide.

If you are using another company's scanner, refer to the company's user manual.

Good point. I am not that familiar with scanners; I just deal with the software that produces the barcodes. My client does not even have a scanner onsite, since the barcodes are used only by their customers, not internally. Hopefully, we will get them the ability to use barcodes in inventory control someday, but this all depends largely on the capabilities of their somewhat antiquated accounting system.

In the meantime, I bought a MetroLogic handheld scanner just to use for testing the barcodes as I configure them. I will check the MetroLogic documentation to see if/where I can set that option.
