How to remove the tilde from Code 39 print?

I have set up a field in FileMaker using Code 39. It prints ok, but the barcode scanner SC5USB, bought in 2010, always puts the tilde as the first character before showing the data. How can I program the scanner to print without the tilde? Has it anything to do with the ApplyTilde setting, even using Code39?

Operating System: Windows 7

Application: FileMaker 11, read into FM11, word an JTL Wawi

The easiest way to remove additional characters programmed into the barcode is to set the scanner to its default settings.

You could also set the prefix to null using the Quick Programming Guide Prefix and Suffix.

Because its current mode is how the scanner is delivered, you or someone within your company may have programmed the scanner for this. Though looking at all of the scanner options and characters, it does not look as if it even includes an option for German characters. Verify that your computer's character set is set up to the language you need.

I have set the scanner to the default setting but am faced with a new problem: The scanner doesn't recognize my German keyboard anymore. So, a code that should read C150-XL is now shown as C150ßXL. How can I resolve this?
Thanks!
