Swedish alphabet characters Å, Ä, Ö not working in barcodes

I am new to using barcodes but I have more than 10 years of experience with Crystal Reports. I have recently bought IDAutomation native barcodes to Crystal Reports. In my first barcode report, I had a problem with the barcode when it contained the Swedish signs å, ä and ö.

In our office we have a Canon scanner with barcode recognition. The scanner can understand my barcodes until they includes the Swedish alphabet characters å, ä och ö.

I have crosschecked with Canon and their R&D department has sent me an example of text including the Swedish alphabet, and this barcode (PDF471) is fully read by the scanner without any problem.

How do I also include the Swedish characters Å, Ä, Ö in the IDAutomation native barcodes for Crystal Reports? Many thanks in advance.

Thank you for the sample, that was a big help.

I am still not sure what the problem is however. The sample barcode and the one created by the Crystal generator were different, but scanned the same data with the hand held scanner.

I did manage to get the barcode to look similar by setting the following variables in the naive generator.

DataToEncode = "Test_123åäö"
EccLevel = 1
ColumnSpecify = 2
RowSpecify = 0
PDFTruncate = 0

Try setting these in your formula to see if that makes a difference.

Pelle,

For some reason the sample barcode did not attach. Can you email it to support@idautomation.com?

It is very strange. Canon (Nuance eCopy) barcode recognition software cannot recognize the following sign; underscore (_), minus (-), or spaces in strings. The problem is not the Swedish ÅÄÖ characters in the alphabet as I first thought.

I forwarded the attached barcode in your last answer and it still could not be understood by their scanner.

According to Canon, the eCopy barcode recognition should be fully compatible with the PDF417 standardization. If they create a PDF417 barcode (I have no idea what software they use for generating barcodes) that includes an underscore it works perfectly. Please see the attached barcode for the string "test_123åäö". This barcode was scanned and recognized in the scanner. When I generate the same barcode using IDAutomation native Crystal Report PDF417 it is not recognized in the Canon eCopy software.

Are there any settings in the Visual Basic variables for generating the code for the PDF417 barcode? Any parameters for string, binary, etc.? I need to be able to generate barcodes with all these signs.

Thanks in advance. Take care.

Pelle,

I am not sure what the problem could be.
I ran another test and encoded the same value, "Anmälan_2012-06-28", and scanned the barcode with three hand held scanners. All three returned the data correctly, "Anmälan_2012-06-28".

There may be a error with the software recognition software, or with a setting to scan PDF417 barcodes in binary or text mode.

Here is a screen shot of the barcode that was created on my system.

Okay, maybe the ÅÄÖ characters are not my issue?

I have a string "Anmälan_2012-06-28" that could NOT be understood in the Canon copy-printer barcode recognition software (Nuance eCopy). I first thought that it was the special Swedish character, ä, causing the issue.

Now I tested with the string "Anmälan20120628" and the string is recognized. The issue seem to be that the underscore (_) and the minus sign (-) in the Swedish dates makes the PDF417 barcode corrupt or at least not readable in the barcode recognition software.

I would like to have the string "Anmälan_YYYY-MM-DD", but it currently does not work if I do not remove the underscore and minus sign. Do you have any idea why it will not work?

Many thanks in advance.

Pelle,

I have not been able to recreate the error. I set DataToEncode to ÅÄÖ and the barcode created was able to read these characters.
For example,
DataToEncode = "ÅÄÖ"

Since these are extended ASCII characters, I did need to use a com enabled scanner in order to see these characters.

Pelle,

I believe the issue is that those characters are extended ASCII characters. I will test those values on my end and see what I can come up with.
