SSCC 18 Barcode and additional AI Fields

Hello,

One of my customers has asked me to encode an SSCC 18 barcode, but they have added an AI 90 on the end of it. I cannot seem to get that to scan properly. But everything I reading is that the SSCC 18 is a fixed length barcode. Is this the case ? Should the ID Automation GS1-128 software be able to encode additional AI functions in an SSCC18 ?

My example:
(00) 040595910000000018(90)20

Thank you,
Dave

Hello Dave,

Thanks for following up. Based on our testing, the barcode you provided is scannable and decodes correctly. We verified this using IDAutomation’s Barcode Decode app, as well as other scanner apps and GS1 AI online parsers. This confirms that the barcode generation process is functioning as expected.

If you have concerns about the full barcode structure or additional Application Identifiers (AIs), we recommend consulting the GS1 specifications or checking with your customer for further clarification. However, in terms of scannability, the barcode is working correctly.

We cannot comment on Pretty GS1, but since you’re experiencing issues scanning the barcode, the most likely cause is your scanner’s settings or capabilities. We suggest testing with another scanner to verify.

Please let us know if you need any further guidance.

1. Are you using the Native Barcode Generator for Crystal Reports from your order?
2. What is the exact string you are encoidng with?
3. If you are pulling the data from fields have you tested a hard coded string as provided above?
4. Can you provide an image of the barcode that is being generated?

1. Yes. Using the Native Barcode Generator
2. ~2020008956350011234567~m17~202906
3. The string fields come in from sql and I have also hard coded the values. If I take off the ending AI, it shows as a proper SSCC18. Once I add the (90)6, it no longer decodes. I am using Pretty GS1 IOS app to verify as it does a pretty good job splitting the fields.

Thank you,

Hello Dave,

Thanks for reaching out to IDAutomation, in a GS1-128 barcode, you can include additional AIs after the SSCC-18 as part of a concatenated GS1-128 barcode, provided that the proper GS1 encoding rules are followed. While we do not have access to the exact specifications required by your customer, we can confirm that the barcode can be generated and scanned with the additional AI(s) in place.

For example, using the Native Barcode Generator for Crystal Reports, in the IDAutomation Native - GS1-128 with HRI Report, that is provided with the solution, I was able to successfully generate a GS1-128 barcode with the following syntax:

DataToEncode = "~202" & "000405959100000000189020"

The AI (00) for SSCC-18 is a fixed-length field (18 digits), so when we provide the above string into the Human Readable Field also we can see that the AI (90) is successfully parsed, and the barcode with the same encoded string can scan.

While we cannot confirm whether this specific format aligns with your customer’s requirements, the barcode generation solution itself is fully capable of encoding and scanning the data as specified.

If you are unable to get the barcode to scan with this information please answer the below troubleshooting questions:

1. Are you using the Native Barcode Generator for Crystal Reports from your order?
2. What is the exact string you are encoidng with?
3. If you are pulling the data from fields have you tested a hard coded string as provided above?
4. Can you provide an image of the barcode that is being generated?

If you've tested the hard-coded string provided and it's still not able to scan, it's possible it could be your scanner and in which case we do recommend testing a different scanner or consulting your scanner's user manual.
