Tab does not apply in excel

scanner Motorola DS6707 default settings
I created a datamatrix barcode using the datamatrix font encoder first~d009second.
generated the barcode and scanned it into Excel. it returns the first second with the second in italics and all of it in the initial cell. the tab is not honored. If I scan in Notepad the tab is honored but not in Word either. have any idea what I am missing here?

Operating System: win 7

So thank you for your help and I figure I’ll add back to the conversation. The issue indeed was the barcode scanner.
Using the ASCII string decoder tool as you suggested I was able to see a difference between you scanning with your barcode gun ~d009 returned <TAB> vs my barcode scanner ~d009 returned <HT>

And I could get the <TAB> to show vs <HT> by enabling “Function Key Mapping” on the barcode scanner.
Now it tabs in Excel as expected!
