Encode function Key (F1, F2, F3 ...) Into A Barcode

I'm trying to generate a barcode that contains an F1 keypress. I'm using the IDAutomation Code 39 Barcode Font Package and I’m following the instructions found here.

If, for example, I create a barcode to have F1, then I generate it through this string:

*$Q*

When I scan it, it doesn't replicate the F1 keypress on a keyboard. If I open a notepad and scan *$Q* barcode, the result is just a return or a vertical tab.

I don't understand what is wrong. If I put in my barcode TAB or RETURN commands they work without problems, but function keys (F1, F2, F3…) still don't work.

What do you suggest?

Operating System: Windows

Application: Excel

The referenced page is specifically designed for the IDAutomation SC5-USB scanner.

If using a different scanner, it is recommended that you refer to the scanner support/documentation to see if the scanner supports ‘Function Key Emulation’ (possibly known as ‘Keyboard Wedge’) and how you could encode the F* keys, as each manufacturer implements this functionality differently.

* F1, F2, F3… on a keyboard.
