Character Usage Results In Unreadable Barcodes

We tried encoding the following strings - the first in Crystal Reports and the second in Oracle Reports:

1. "First Line" + chr(13) + "Second Line" + chr(13) + “Third Line” (using the Universal 2D Barcode Font)

2. '`' || 'First Section' || 'Second Section' (Code 128a)

We were wondering if you could shed some light on the situation.

Operating System: Windows

Application: Crystal Reports, Oracle Reports

It is not apparent to the human eye, but both cases are of wrong-character usage:

1. The characters surrounding Third Line are actually Unicode 8220 () and 8221 (), which it seems SAP Crystal Reports does not support (yet might not throw an error to the effect).

Solution: Correct both characters with standard quotes, ASCII 34 (").

2. The character (`) between the single quotes is ASCII 96, which encodes a Code 128 FNC3 (GS1) character, which most scanners do not interpret, which is why the barcode will not scan on a standard scanner.

Solution: Either remove the ASCII 96 character or replace it with another character from the Code A column of the Code 128 Barcode Font Character Set Table.
