Code 128 and I2of5 Barcodes Not Scanning in Word

I have generated Code 128 and Interleaved 2of5 barcodes by using an encoding tool and then merging that encoded data to Microsoft Word, where the barcode font is applied to complete the barcode. Most of my barcodes scan without issue, but certain sets of data are producing unscannable barcodes. I am using standard Code 128 and standard Interleaved 2of5 encoding tools in a Windows environment. Why are certain values producing unscannable barcodes?

Operating System: Windows

Application: Microsoft Word

The issue reported is happening with the Code 128 Barcode Font Package and the Interleaved 2 of 5 ITF Barcode Fonts packages. The encoded data for certain values is not scanning because of a style issue with some of the encoded characters in Word.

For example, using Code 128:

Data being encoded: 2091070834
Data returned by the encoding tool: image
When the data is merged into Microsoft Word: image

As you can see in the encoded data, the apostrophe character returned from the encoding tool is a vertical apostrophe, whereas the data, when merged into Word, now has a diagonal (backtick) apostrophe. This can affect the scannability of the barcode when the barcode font is applied to the encoded data.

The apostrophe is not the only encoded character that can be affected by the style of the character in Word; the apostrophe is only one example of this issue.

To resolve the issue in Microsoft Word, you will need to change how Word is applying "Auto Format" to the data in Word documents.
Open your Word document before using the encoded data in the document. Go to File > Options.
In the Window that opens, choose Proofing > Auto Correct Options > Auto Format and uncheck the boxes that alter the encoded data, such as "Straight Quotes" with "Smart Quotes" and save your changes.

This will allow Word to display the encoded text correctly so that the barcode can be scanned when the barcode font is applied.

Alternately, IDAutomation provides a different encoding solution with our Universal 1D Barcode Font Package product that encodes the data as a string of uppercase letters without the special characters used in standard Code 128 and Interleaved 2of5 encoding. If you cannot change the Auto Format settings in Word, the Universal encoding will resolve the issue.
