This error tells us that our class was compiled with a newer version of Java than the version with which we tried to run it. To fix this issue, compile to an earlier supported version of Java or uninstall and reinstall the latest version of the Java JDK. This particular issue was resolved by compiling to target Java 8 with the following syntax:
javac --release 8 yourapp.java

Java class file version numbers and release reference:
= Java 1.1
= Java 1.2
= Java 1.3
= Java 1.4
= Java 5
= Java 6
= Java 7
= Java 8
= Java 9
= Java 10
= Java 11
= Java 12
= Java 13
= Java 14
= Java 15
= Java 16
= Java 17
= Java 18
= Java 19
= Java 20
= Java 21
= Java 22
