Random numbers not printing in e13b MICR line with HP LaserJet

We're using the standard e13b MICR font as part of our AP check printing through Oracle EBS Applications using BI Publisher. The PDF file produced by the check run looks fine and all characters and numbers are present in the MICR line. Our checks are normally printed to a dedicated printer which is the HP LaserJet 8150n. Over the last month, we've had three check batches that when they are printed through the HP 8150n, one number will not print in the MICR line.

In the first batch, no 3's would print. In the second batch, no 8's would print and in the 3rd check batch, 2's would not print in the MICR line. The last two check batches were created this week. Position on the MICR line does not seem to matter and it's just one number out of each batch that will not print.

Printing the PDF file to the HP 8150n directly from Oracle or a desktop PC does not alter the outcome. The number will still be missing. However, if we print these batches to another printer (Not an 8150n), the missing numbers in the MICR will print. The problem goes away. Have you experienced an issue like this where a particular number in the MICR line will not print on older HP printers? Our 8150n printer is from 2003.

In some cases this type of problem can be caused by the printer, the data being sent to the printer, or the printer's driver. A process of elimination may help find the source of the problem. Alternatively, you could try a different font type, for example, if you are using TrueType, try OpenType.

Additionally, changing the print method to print TrueType as graphics and various raster options has been known to solve some print issues.

Lastly, any KBs may lead you to the solution.
