PDF417 accuracy, size and recognition

We are currently evaluating the PDF-417 barcode font for an upcoming project.

We will be encoding about 100 characters in the barcode.

I wanted to know the impact of the Print(er) quality on the recognition of the barcode. Is there a minimum recommendation for the printer that is used to print the barcode so that the recognition quality is not impacted?

Also, in terms of the other parameters e.g. X-to-Y ratio and error correction code, etc. how does that have an impact on the RECOGNITION ACCURACY AND SIZE of a PDF-417 barcode

We will be using a leading SDK like Aspose or Accusoft to read these barcodes.

The PDF417 barcode is very resilient because of the error correction characters. The barcode can endure some damage without the loss of data precision. Please refer to this page for more details on error correction and X-to-Y ratio recommendations.

The DPI of the printer and the amount of data will of course be a factor in the overall size as well. Basically the higher the error correction and the more data, the larger the resulting barcode. There is no way to really tell the total size or readability until it is tested.

Do be aware though that the demo version does encode the word DEMO plus a carriage return and a line feed as a prefix in the data. So it is possible that the demo version may produce a barcode slightly bigger than the purchased version.

This is also a good page for measuring the X and Y dimensions of a printed barcode.

The most common method of reading barcodes is with a PDF Capable Barcode Scanner such as the IDAutomation 2D Barcode Scanner with PQA, which reliably reads the IDAutomation PDF417 Font when printed as small as 3 points, which is an X-dimension of only 5 mils.
