Is there a limitation to the number of characters for Qr Code?

Question

I need to be able to code a large string for machine programming purposes, but when I try to encode a string of 1200 characters the Qr code will not scan.

The upper limit for a QR Code is generally considered to be 4200 ASCII characters or 2900 bytes, but a QR Code of that size is unlikely to be scannable by most scanning devices.
