How Do I Generate UPC-A Bar Codes in A Cognos Reports Using a Streamer?

I am following the tutorial Streaming Barcode Images in Cognos, using the demo to generate barcodes in a Cognos Report.

One of the issues is the cast_barchar function (shown in the above tutorial) called for in the expression - I know of no such function. When I place the Dynamic Barcode Generator URL into the expression definition and run the report, it simply gives back the string version of what I entered in the expression.

If I hard-code the URL string, it works:
'http://bcgen.com/demo/linear-dbgs.aspx?D=' || 123456789012 || '&S=1'

When I use the cast_barchar function, I get errors.

Can you clarify what is going on?

Operating System: Windows

Application: IBM Cognos

I believe you are accidentally mistaking the tutorial example’s field with a function specific to Cognos, the Dynamic SaaS Generator, or its demo.

Here is the fictional example dataset field reference:
cast_barchar([gosales_goretailers].[Products].[Product number])

Here is the field separated for readability*:

http://bcgen.com/demo/linear-dbgs.aspx?D=’ ||
cast_barchar([gosales_goretailers].[Products].[Product number]) ||
‘&S=1’

For instance, if the above field equaled 11 as seen on the top barcode, then the full string rendered value would be equivalent to*:

http://bcgen.com/demo/linear-dbgs.aspx?D=’ ||
‘11’ ||
‘&S=1’

* This would normally be one line.

Rendered string’s result (click on the barcode to see URL in browser):

Using the above and the example, simply replace your real variables or fields in the Expression Definition field so that (when rendered by Cognos) it will form a string that our streamer product will then recognize and respond to with a barcode.

Note:
The above is strictly referring to the general tutorial, which is not UPCa. If you would like to generate UPCa, substitute in the appropriate properties:

D=123456789012 (or a correct number at least 11 digits long)
S=6
