The example explains how to generate barcodes using Universal Fonts in InDesign using Excel as a Data Source. The example uses Excel 2013 for Windows. This solution is also compatible with Mac(Excel 2004 or 2011). Because Excel for Mac 2008 does not include VBA functionality, it is not an option. Consider using the AppleScript solution with the fonts.

The Universal Font Package contains a collection of fonts named IDAutomation Uni that, when used with a font encoder, can create several barcode types including Code 128 (Auto, A, B, and C), Interleaved 2 of 5, and Code 39.

1. Purchase, Download, and install the Universal Font Package.

2. Set up the Universal VBA Font Encoder for Excel (included with the Universal Font Package). The file is named IDAutomation_UniversalFont_VBA.bas

3. Encode data for Universal Barcodes using the formulas for the barcode type to create. The example uses Code 128 =IDAutomation_Uni_C128 and surrounds the cell with parentheses. NOTE: When using Mac, enter the formula in lowercase such as =idautomation_uni_c128.

13. Apply the IDAutomation Uni M font. If demo, apply the IDAutomation SUni M font.
