Word mail merge question

I'm trying to create a Code 128 barcode in a mail merge Word document. The data source is a .txt file and is automatically generated from another application. I've set up the merge field to be formatted as a barcode in Word, however, when the merge is performed it does not pull the appropriate information from the .txt file and just prints the merge field name.

Operating System: Windows 7

The Word Add-In is a great tool, but sometimes it can obscure and confuse the issue of encoding, especially when used in a Mail Merge. The Add-In does not have the capability of updating every merge field when used in a Mail Merge.

Since you do not have access to Excel, I suggest you break it down into individual steps:

1. Find a way to encode your text and save the encoding back to the text file. An idea is to download OpenOffice for free, use the OpenOffice Calc encoder, then save it back to your text file.

2. Bring in the encoded field into the Mail Merge- follow the steps in the Mail Merge Video, but just import your text file, instead.

It's not really a mail merge issue. If I don't encode the field as a 128 barcode the merge works as it should. Unfortunately, I do not have a way to import the information into an Excel document. Is this just not possible using the word add in?

Even though this is a MailMerge question, which is a Microsoft issue, we have some aides that will be helpful.

I would recommend importing your data into Excel, making sure you import it correctly, saving the data as an Excel file, then reviewing the Excel MailMerge Video (the example uses Code 39, but it is the same idea).
