Resolved Questions

Why do some of my Code 128 barcodes not work with InDesign, but do with every other program (Mac).

Here's what happens:

1. Convert a list of serial numbers to Code 128 data using FileMaker Pro and IDAutomation plugin
2. Import that list into InDesign for use with SmartStream Designer for Indigo
3. When printed, a handful of numbers will not scan, most notably the ones that contain the single quote (') in the data.
The same data prints and scans fine with other programs like MS Word, Adobe Illustrator, QuarkXPress, etc.

We have determined that the data is generated correctly since it works with other programs. It's not the SmartStream Designer plugin because it happens even if we copy and paste the data between Filemaker and InDesign. The fonts seem to be functioning and performing correctly. What am I missing?

Operating System: Mac OS10.10.5

Application: FileMaker Pro 11, Adobe InDesign CC 2015 (11.1.0.122 build)

If you are running Mac, the recommended solution to generate Code 128 barcodes is the Universal Font Package or Code 128 Barcode Fonts for Mac. This is because the normal Code 128 Font Package font encoders produce encoded data that is not fully compatible with all Mac applications. Our FileMaker Plug-In for Mac is an exception.

What is the Universal Font Package?

You may try the demo for testing purposes. If you are only working in FileMaker directly, the standard Code 128 Font Package is compatible as the plug-in uses a way to display the encoded data. With other applications such as Word and InDesign for Mac, certain characters are not compatible. Some of the characters in the encoded data for the standard Code 128 are not part of the Mac character set (which uses Roman characters only). The Universal Font Package encoders encode data using the Roman character set. Therefore, it is more compatible with applications.

I am using the FilemakerPro Plug-In and I currently own the IDAutomation Code 128 Font Advantage Package. So, this combination is not correct? If I spend another 400.00 on a 5-user license for the "Universal Font Package" my problem will be solved. I just want to be sure I've exhausted the possible causes before investing in yet another Code 128 font package for our company. Thank you for the quick response!
