When NLS_LANG is set to UTF8, start/stop characters are missing (barcode does not scan)

When NLS_LANG is set to UTF8, Code 128 or Interleaved 2 of 5 encoded data produced with the Oracle PLL (font encoder), does not include start/stop characters

When the NLS_LANG is set to UTF8 and data is encoded using the PLL for Code 128 Fonts or Interleaved 2 of 5 Fonts, start/stop characters may not appear. The UTF8 setting cannot interpret the start/stop characters required to generate a scannable Code 128 or Interleaved 2 of 5 barcodes.

Example:
When the data 12345 is encoded using the Code 128 PLL function, it should produce Í,BÈ5VÎ. If UTF8 is set, the encoded data will appear as ,BÈ5V. If the start/stop characters (Í and Î) are missing, when the barcode font is applied, the barcode will not scan.

The are several options to generate Code 128 or Interleaved 2 of 5:

OPTION 1
Do not use UTF8.

OPTION 2
For Oracle Reports 9i and above, IDAutomation has the Universal Font Package solution. Universal Fonts can generate Code 128, Interleaved 2 of 5, and other linear barcode types.

What are Universal Fonts?

OPTION 3
Native Generator for Oracle Reports (this product can use UTF8). It is for Oracle 9i and above.

OPTION 4
For Oracle 9i and above, the Java Component can generate images.
