IDAutomation recommends using the Code 128 Auto function as it generates the most efficient barcode. However, we are also aware that clients have use cases and specific encoding rules that they must follow.

Within our products, there is an option to switch character sets manually by encoding the Code A, B, or C characters.

SWITCH CHARACTERS

Code A is É (ASCII 201)
Code B is È (ASCII 200)
Code C is Ç (ASCII 199)

The example will explain how to switch between character sets using the Barcode Image Generator.

Run the Image Generator and set the Symbology to Code 128.

SWITCH FROM CHARACTER SET A TO B
1. Set the Character Set to A

2. Enter the data in the Data To Encode area and include the Code B character: DATAÈ123A

The switch to B from A will occur right after the second A in DATA.

Scans as:
DATA123A

NOTE: Switching from B to A is a similar process. Start in Character Set B and use the Code A character.

SWITCH C CHARACTER SET
Switching from A to C or B to C requires an additional step.

When the encoding starts in Set A or B and then switches to C using the Code C (Ç), the C data is entered using the starting Character Set's value. For example, if the data starts in Set A, switches to C, and the data that comes after the switch is 03, then based on the chart, the character to encode is a # symbol.

The example explains how to start in Set A and switch to C using the data ABCD1502.

1. Set the Character Set to A

2. Enter the data for Set A in the Data To Encode area ABCD.

3. Enter the Code C character Ç in the Data To Encode area.

4. Separate 1502 into pairs to make 15, 02. Code 128 C data must be separated into pairs.

5. Use the Code 128 Character Set Chart and pull the Char values for 15 and 02.

Based on the chart:
15 is /
02 is "

6. Enter the Char values for set C: /"

The complete value is:
ABCDÇ/"

Result:

Scans as:
ABCD1502

NOTE: Encoding the data as is for set C will produce an incorrect scan. Encoding as ABCDÇ1502 will produce a barcode that scans as ABCD17211618 where
17, 21, 16, and 18 are the Values for 1, 5, 0, and 2.
