How to scan old 128 barcode with number format, then print out data matrix barcode with another no. format

My company is in the process of changing about 10,000 existing 128 barcodes to 2d data matrix barcodes. At the same time, the barcode alphanumeric is changing. What I would like to do is scan an existing 128 barcode which looks it up on an Excel list, find the new barcode alphanumeric, and print out a DataMatrix barcode together with the Company name and barcode alphanumeric.

If this can be included within Excel, the list can be verified i.e. when an old barcode is scanned, and a new barcode is printed, the row is updated with a completed check-box or something, so we can be sure to update/verify all lists.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you, that is very informative.

Unfortunately, the label software does not have the extra capability you need to scan and print the specific label. Its sole purpose is to generate labels from a list, static values, etc...

We do have an affiliate, Nice Label, whose software is more robust than ours and might have a solution for you. Refer to this page for more information, including the overview, and support information.

They can also be reached by phone, at 262-784-2466.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Tim,

In reference to your reply, I hope to provide you with the information you have requested.

The code 128 barcodes are already printed and attached to our assets. The issue is that we have a new ERP system, which will handle the tracking of assets. However, the existing barcode number will no longer be used, but a completely new barcode number that has already been generated by the ERP system, for which we can download a list to Excel showing the correlation between the existing barcode and the new barcode.

Then we need to be able to replace the labels on the assets, by printing out new labels based upon the new barcode number (derived from the old barcode number), with a 2d data matrix format and including the new barcode number as text on the label, together with a three-letter identification for the Company name.

I have attached a pic of the old and new labels for your ease of reference: image

We have existing labels - 45mm x 20mm and we have a scanner, Intermec, and a barcode printer - citizen. All we therefore need is a software solution to create the label in the format we want and then when we scan an existing 128 barcode, it will automatically match and locate the new barcode no. (for example from an Excel list) and then print out a new label with the 2d barcode and appropriate text.

I have used your demo software, and it seems to create a label perfectly, as demonstrated in the above picture, however, it is the ability to scan an old barcode, find the new barcode, and then print it out individually - rather than printing out a list in one go - that I would like your assistance as whether it is possible with your software or not.

Please do not hesitate to ask for further clarification if you need it.

Thanks,

Adie

Adie,

We have several data matrix products that help you create 2D barcodes. Can you give me some more details on how the code 128 barcodes are generated? For example are they printed right from Excel, or does Excel just hold the data and another program like Word prints the barcodes?

Also, is the goal to print labels?

To look up existing barcodes in the list, you could scan the barcodes in a find window. Do you already have a scanner or are you looking for a recommendation?
