Resolved Questions

Trying to come up with a font to use for 128. I was using 128 B or A, don't know but it's too long. Suggestions

I am toying with the idea of trying to find a font to solve this problem. We have a text field of about 70 characters we are trying to print. using 128 A or B, don't know for sure, the code is like 6 inches long and not readable. I believe there is a solution to this after playing with the tool you have online using Auto, whatever that is. I'm wondering if this is available. Obviously, I'm not really technical but I get the general idea here.

Unfortunately, in order to create a dense barcode, code 128 requires a calculation that manipulates the data by adding start-stop characters and the check digit. If you do not have a preference for the barcode type, then code 39 may be a better option as long as you have a small amount of data. Code 39 only requires an asterisk at the beginning and end of your data to create valid encoded data. The only problem is that creates a much larger barcode than code 128.

If your requirement is code 128, then consider generating the barcode as an image rather than a font using the Barcode ActiveX control. The encoding is handled directly in the control.

What is the difference between Barcode Fonts and Barcode Images (Components and Applications)?

Thank you but I am trying to do this without an encoder or add-in Apparently it can't be done so I need to take a whole new approach. I was hoping I could do it entirely with a font but setting up the special characters in the text and then converting them. However, I will keep this in mind because I think it works for another application in which I'm using MS Report Builder. thanks for your help.

There are a couple of ways to generate a code 128 barcode using a font in Word. If you need to generate only a few barcodes on a particular document, then I recommend downloading the Word Barcode Add-in font encoder.

Word Add-In Example

It is also possible to generate Code 128 barcodes in Word by encoding the data in Excel using the Excel Barcode Add-In for mail merge.

NOTE: The Excel and Word Add-In is a single download that installs for Word and Excel.

OK, that makes perfect sense, so my question is whether I can manually create those bar codes in Word if I key in the special characters. Word won't accept a tilde. If I just want to see (01)1234 in Word using your font, can I do it without a Font Encoder if I'm willing to enter the special characters required for the beginning and end and the app indicator, 01.?

Before barcode fonts can be applied to the data, the data must be encoded using a font encoder. For an introduction to barcoding, please take a look at this forum article.

What is the purpose of a font encoder?

I need to stick with 128 but when I try the demo fonts, they don't seem to work. I think I'm not understanding how the demo fonts are to be used. In other words, I go into Word and switch fonts but the bar code is not readable. I'm missing something obvious I think.

What application are you using to create code 128 barcodes? IDAutomation has a collection of font encoders that include the ability to generate Code 128 Auto.

If the barcode is too large, consider a 2D barcode type such as Data Matrix.
